Fall cleaning tips!
- Clean from the bottom to the top! Go through and dust everything in each and every room, large and small. Everything from walls to ceilings to baseboards, etc. Summer is a common time for the house to collect dust, and dust is an easy way to cause irritation in the winter for colds and allergies alike. Follow through with a thorough vacuuming of carpets and any fabric drapes you may have to clean up any of the dust that may have been missed due to being disturbed and moved during the dusting process.
- Winterize the beds as the weather drops. Pull out all of your heavier winter blankets and give them a solid wash first to make them feel like new. Flip or rotate your mattress (fun fact: you should be doing this every three months by the way!). These things will allow you to tuck your kids and loved ones into a warm, cozy and clean winter bed.
- Organize the closets. This is always the worst, but it's important to stay on top of it so it's less of a stressor each season. Go through your closets (and your kids’ closets!) and pull items that you no longer wear or don’t fit into anymore. Make a pile of clothing to donate. Swap out the summer styles for the winter coats and sweaters that have been packed away.
- Wash the windows. We know, it can be gross! But that's the point. Go through the house and wash ALL the windows, indoors and out, to avoid this step during the cold and snowy winter months. Take out the screens and wash them so they’re ready to go next summer. Replace them with storm windows to help keep the cold out and your energy bill lower.
- Deep clean the kitchen. Fall means the holidays will be here before we know it, and holidays often bring guests. Deep clean all of your appliances – refrigerator, oven, and dishwasher. Organize your cabinets and drawers to make sure you can easily find what you need. Be sure to wipe down trash bins, walls, cabinets, and back splashes for anything you may have missed wiping down counters the last three months. It can layer and get gross!
DIY Fall Decor
Step 1: This is such a simple project! Buy a pre stained, or unstained and stain, a wooden box plantar. This really is such a simple project that anyone can do.
Step 2: Then take some Spanish Moss or other filler and place in the bottom of your box. (*BE CAREFUL WHEN USING WITH CANDLES AS THE MOSS IS DRY AND FLAMMABLE. NEVER LEAVE A BURNING CANDLE UNATTENDED.)
Step 3: Take some berry garlands and tuck them into the edges of the boxes and hide the wires under the moss. I used a couple of different garlands for this. A white one and a multi-colored autumn one.
Step 4: Throw in some fruit and/or vegetables and a couple of candles and you have a lovely centerpiece for the middle of your table. I like that it is also low and doesn’t intrude on your table space!
Fall Stove Top Potpouri Goodness
Here is what you will need:
- the peel of one orange
- one cut up apple
- 2 large cinnamon sticks
- 1 tablespoon of cloves
- 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon of almond extract
- 1.5 cups of water plus plenty more for refill
Place all ingredients in a cooking pot and simmer throughout the day while adding a bit of water from time to time. Also, you can reuse this mix for three days and store it in the fridge overnight. Ta dah!

Prepare For Winter Storms Winter storms may not happen often but you want to be prepared for when they do occur. Get a home and car emergency kit and place it somewhere reachable at all times. You also need to ensure your oil tank is full and, if possible, get a generator. The possibility of the power going off during a storm is quite high. However, with a fully-powered generator and reserved fuel, you can ride the storm without any qualms. Inspect the Roof You sure don’t want melting snow leaking down your roof in the thick of the winter. This is why you need a roof inspection to help you spot any potential issues. You can either do your roof inspection yourself or call a professional. If you’re going the DIY route, here are some of the things to check and do: Missing or damaged shingles Large accumulation of moss which may signal decay Trim tree branches close to the roof and house Check gutters for clogging, debris and corrosion.
